Wheel of Life
Spring Equinox
Eostre: (pronounced E-ostra, also known as Ostara, Spring Equinox etc.), March
21-23. Time of equal day and equal night. This is often celebrated with eggs
(beginnings) and rabbits (fertility) ... see the theme? It is now time to lay
the seeds of new projects and new directions that you have meditated on
throughout the cold months. Now is the time to start taking action. Colors for
this sabbat: Purple and Yellow
March what a lovely month. This is the time of the year we all have cabin fever.
We get a couple days of sun and warmth (now for those of you who do not know
this is written in New England) We all have one thing in common we all think
spring is on the way!
We start to see all the little creatures running around looking for the last bit
of food from last year. The department stores are getting their summer supply of
planting material in. The weather is so strange. Rain. snow, sun who knows what
it will be like in the next few days But when the sun comes "oh man look out
cause we are all out basking in the sun rays."
I have asked myself "What is the big deal Carla" For me it is: No more snow,
gardening, new beginnings, The spiral of life and it has no ends. I know this is
kind of a crazy answer but when you look at each thing you can see the
connection of it all. I know your saying what? Well here are some for you.
1) Energy-every thing has energy.
2) The spiral of change is season from winter to summer I know it will be back
next year to repeat all that has came and gone.
3) Planting= the energy of the sun and the change of seasons. The break of the
soil to give new life to the plants we wish to grow.
The list can keep going but as you see the strongest connection is energy. We
all know everything in life has energy. We sometime seem to forget the
importance of this. The connection of life and energy. If we use this time of
new growth of all energy we shall see it will help us make a wish come true. So
get out the crayons make that manifestation board. Bring in positive energy in
your mind. This is the perfect time for us to start up new ideas and goals.
I have put this in connection with may things you can say it is like the ocean
when the tide comes in it is feeding all the hidden treasures when the tide is
out is out we can receive much gifts
It is the same with the moon. Awwwwww how pretty a full moon . Many say "Oh it
must be a full moon" well yes the energy is changed. The best time for me to do
some energy work is either right before after.
Spring equinox has been around for thousand of years. If we do a little research
we can see the connection in religions and in countries. Below is a list of just
a few. I hope you enjoy to see the history of this lovely time
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
History of the Spring Equinox
Spring Equinox is also known as: Feast of Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin
Mary,Alban Eilir, Festival of Trees, Ostara, Ostra,Lady Day, Naw Ruz, No Ruz,
Eostar, Eostre, Rites of Spring, and the Vernal Equinox

Christians
There has been a needle in the hey stack for thousands of years, This holiday
has fallen on different dates which has caused an up roar in the Christian
councils. The original idea was to have it fall on the first Sunday after the
full moon (or on spring equinox) The orthodox has a different date it is using
Julian calendar. The difference is the moon phases. Eastern has their moon chart
to align with the Astronomical full moon. This was aligned with the meridian
line of Jerusalem. What happen here? The crucifixion and resurrection. The two
Christian beliefs that get confused are the Vernal Equinox/ Easter and the Feast
of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The first, the Feast of the
Annunciation of blesses Mary occurs on the fixed calendar day of March 25th,
(Annunciation' means an announcement) This day is the day that the angel Gabriel
tells Mary that she was 'with child'. The Church picked the Vernal Equinox for
this event because it was necessary to have Mary conceive the child a full nine
months before his birth at the Winter Solstice (Christmas) Mary's pregnancy
would take the natural nine months to complete, even if the conception was a bit
unorthodox. The second one which gets mixed up in this is Easter. Celebrates the
victory of a god of light over darkness, so it makes sense to place it at this
season. Ironically, the name 'Easter' came from the name of a Teutonic lunar
Goddess, Eostre ( gets the name of the female hormone, estrogen). Her symbols
were the bunny ( for fertility and because her worshipers saw a hare in the full
moon) and the egg (cosmic egg of creation), images which Christians have been
hard pressed to explain. The Eostara, was held on the Vernal Equinox Full Moon.
The Church does not celebrate full moons, (even if they did do all the
calculations by them), so they planted their Easter on the following Sunday,
Easter is always the first Sunday, after the first Full Moon, after the Vernal
Equinox. If you've ever wondered why Easter moved all around the calendar, now
you will know why. If Easter Sunday were to fall on the Full Moon itself, then
Easter was postponed to the following Sunday.

Pagan
The old Pagan focuses on natural conception, when the young virgin Goddess mates
with the young solar God, who has just displaced his rival. In the mythical
sense, the couple may have been lovers, since the young God reached puberty. She
does not conceive until (surprise!) the Vernal Equinox. This may also be their
Hand-fasting, a sacred marriage between God and Goddess called a Hierogamy, the
ultimate Great Rite.
Incidentally, this raises another point, some Pagan traditions began referring
to the Vernal Equinox as Eostara. This is incorrect. Eostara is a lunar holiday,
honoring a lunar Goddess, at the Vernal Full Moon. The name 'Eostara' is best
reserved to the nearest Esbat, rather than the Sabbath itself. However, it is
notable that some of the same groups misappropriated the term 'Lady Day' for
Beltane, which left no good folk name for the Equinox. Thus, Eostara was
misappropriated for it, completing a chain-reaction of displacement. Needless to
say, the old and accepted folk name for the Vernal Equinox is 'Lady Day'.
Christians sometimes insist that the title is in honor of Mary and her
Annunciation, Today, Pagans continue to celebrate the coming of Spring. They
attribute the changes that are going on in the world to an increase in the
powers of their God and Goddess. The God and the Goddess are often portrayed as
The Green Man and Mother Earth. The Green Man is said to be born of Mother Earth
in the depths of winter and to live through the rest of the year until he dies
at Samhain.
Modern astronomy aside, people have recognized the vernal equinox for thousands
of years. There is no shortage of rituals and traditions surrounding the coming
of spring. Many early peoples celebrated for the basic reason that their food
supplies would soon be restored. The date is significant in Christianity because
Easter always falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the
vernal equinox. It is also probably no coincidence that early Egyptians built
the Great Sphinx so that it points directly toward the rising Sun on the day of
the vernal equinox.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Egyptian religion
Ra or Re , in Egyptian religion, sun god, one of the most important gods of
ancient Egypt. Ra was chief of the cosmic deities and was sometimes called the
creator and father of all things. Early Egyptian kings alleged descent from him
and added his name to their own royal titles. Ra had several manifestations, the
most common being those of the hawk and the lion. He was depicted as sailing
across the sky in a celestial barge during the day and battling the forces of
evil and darkness by night. Various other Egyptian gods were frequently
identified with him, such as Amon and Atum
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is the time that the day and night have the exact same amount of time this
also happens also in the fall. It is a special time for it only happens twice a
year. This is a great time to say our thanks to the moon and sun for all they
have given us.
Spring Equinox and Fall Equinox the Sun rises exactly in the east travels
through the sky for 12 hours and sets exactly in the west. On the Photo above it
shows you that Equinox is in the motion of the Sun through the sky for everyone
on earth. Every place on earth experiences a 12 hours day twice a year.
